Nature - Realism

Animis stands for everything animate and wild based on the Greek word animos. That's exactly what I want to capture in my nature illustrations.

The paintings are intended as tranquil nature portraits that combine precision and atmosphere, sharpening the eye for extraordinary perspective

Nature-loving

I am a botanical illustrator living in Vienna and work in watercolor. Growing up in Bavaria, I loved the local meadows and forests. This early and intensive exposure to nature shaped my perspective and sparked a fascination and ambition for naturalistic painting from an early age.

Self-taught

As a self-taught artist, I have developed an intuitive approach to color and form since 2019, which continues to characterize my botanical illustrations. In my work, I combine careful observation with a sensitive visual language. My aim is not only botanical accuracy, but also to make vitality visible – the subtle shimmer of a surface, the tension of a line, or the moment of a barely perceptible movement.

FAQ

What are botanical illustrations?

Botanical illustration is an art form that depicts plants precisely and scientifically accurately. It focuses on characteristic features such as leaves, flowers, fruits, and growth forms. Unlike photography, illustration allows for the combination and selective highlighting of different developmental stages and important details to make a plant clearly identifiable.

Its history stretches back to antiquity, but botanical illustration gained particular importance from the Renaissance onwards. From the 16th to the 19th century, it was an indispensable tool in botany and medicine. In a time before photography, illustrations served to identify, classify, and document plants and accompanied scientific expeditions around the world.

Botanical illustration remains relevant today. It combines art and science and is used in research, education, nature conservation, publishing, and contemporary design.

How are nature illustrations painted?

Each of my hand-painted originals is created on high-quality, archival-quality paper using professional artist paints. I find my inspiration in the beauty of flora and fauna.

I typically work with live plants and animals, as well as with my own photographs as reference material. For commissioned work, I also like to use references provided to me or research suitable motifs together with my clients.

My creative process:

My first step is to develop a harmonious composition. To do this, I sketch the individual elements of the motif on drawing paper and then carefully transfer them to watercolor paper. Next, I mix the colors and match them as precisely as possible to my reference object. Only when I am satisfied with the color result does the actual painting process begin – with calm, concentration, and attention to detail.
